Grace Van Loo turned her internship experience into a job opportunity with the help of NCMC Career Services

Grace Van Loo, a North Central accounting student from Charlevoix, is on track to graduate in 2026. Thanks to the guidance and support from her North Central accounting instructor and NCMC's Career Services department, she secured an internship at Irish Boat Shop, which eventually led to a part-time position.

During her internship, Grace focused on accounts payable, managing tasks such as processing invoices and assisting with the weekly payment runs. Her dedication and performance caught the attention of Irish Boat Shop’s leadership, with Shae Cross, president of the company, praising her contributions:

"Grace took on this internship as a learning opportunity, and she really sunk her teeth into the role," Cross said. "She has a great attitude, and we are excited to have her as part of the team."

Looking ahead, Grace plans to continue building her career as a full-time accountant at a local business. Reflecting on her success, she emphasizes the importance of networking and building strong relationships, especially with mentors who can guide you toward career opportunities. Her accounting professor played a key role in connecting her to the position, serving as both a reference and a mentor.

Grace offers the following advice to fellow students: "Company culture is important. Make sure it’s a place where you can see yourself thriving. It’s a learning experience that might lead to a job offer, so do your research before applying. Most importantly, be confident in pursuing the opportunity that’s right for you — there are plenty out there."
