NCMC Career Services helped launch Hayden Oberg’s engineering career

Hayden Oberg, from Petoskey, Michigan, is currently working as a manufacturing engineer and IT intern at Kilwins, where he plays an instrumental role in transitioning the company to a new enterprise resource planning (ERP) software system.

A North Central graduate, Oberg continued his studies in mechanical engineering technology at Ferris State University before returning to Petoskey to pursue his career. His ultimate goal? Leading a research and development team focused on innovative product creation.

At Kilwins, Oberg’s responsibilities are diverse. He’s involved in everything from equipment training and maintenance to helping the engineering team review bills of materials (BOM) for accuracy. He’s also deeply engaged in time studies and creating process maps to streamline the production process.

Kilwins Director of IT, George Fabis, praises Oberg’s commitment: “Internships are a pivotal part of career development when there’s a strong collaboration between the student, their college, and the company. We benefit from interns like Hayden, and it gives our team members leadership opportunities through mentoring. Hayden has taken on key roles in our ERP project, gaining significant exposure to cross-functional collaboration."

Oberg is quick to credit NCMC Career Services with helping him land this role.

“Career Services opened doors I might not have considered,” Oberg reflects. “If they hadn’t sent me this opportunity, I may not have applied.”

For students aiming to find their ideal job, Oberg offers this advice: “Don’t give up, and use your resources. Career Services can be a game changer. Networking is essential, too. You never know who might help you get your foot in the door.”

With a focus on continual growth, Oberg aims to apply his engineering knowledge in a hands-on environment while advancing his skills in critical thinking and problem-solving. His vision is to be part of a team where innovation meets practical application.
