Participants will gain practical experience, explore nursing education pathways, and discover opportunities in healthcare.

North Central Michigan College (NCMC) is inviting high school students to explore nursing careers through its Future Nurses Summer Camp, a four-day program designed to introduce participants to healthcare professions and nursing education pathways.

The camp will take place July 13—16 from 9 a.m.— 4 p.m. on North Central's Petoskey campus and in the NCMC Simulation Lab located inside McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital.

The program is open to students entering grades 10—12 in Fall 2026 who reside within North Central's service area. Enrollment is limited to 20 students, and registration closes June 19.

Participants will gain hands-on experience with Friends and Family CPR, vital sign assessment, and guided health assessments using simulation while exploring basic anatomy, pediatric and maternity care concepts, disability awareness, nursing education pathways, and nursing career opportunities.

Pamela Oshaben, a registered nurse with more than 30 years of professional experience and 13 years of teaching experience, will provide instruction.

The camp reflects the college's commitment to expanding awareness of healthcare careers while helping build a pipeline of future nurses for Northern Michigan communities.

"Building the future nursing workforce starts long before students enter college," said Cassandra Hernandez, dean of Workforce and Continuing Education. "Future Nurses Summer Camp gives high school students a meaningful introduction to the profession while helping North Central support the long-term healthcare needs of our region."

Healthcare providers across Michigan continue to face shortages of qualified nurses and other medical professionals. In rural communities throughout Northern Michigan, early career exploration programs help students discover opportunities to pursue healthcare careers close to home.

The registration fee is $149. Limited scholarship assistance may be available for families experiencing financial hardship. Participants will receive take-home materials, an NCMC Future Nurse scrub top, and daily lunch.
