North Central Michigan College (NCMC) is encouraging more Michigan adults to take the next step toward earning a college degree or skilled trades certificate following an expansion of the Michigan Reconnect program.

As part of Michigan's newly signed fiscal year 2027 budget, adults 21 years of age and older are now eligible for Michigan Reconnect tuition assistance, lowering the previous eligibility age from 25 and expanding access to affordable higher education for thousands more Michigan residents.

Michigan Reconnect covers the remaining balance of in-district tuition and mandatory fees after other state and federal financial aid has been applied. Students attending an out-of-district community college receive a significant tuition discount. The program is designed to help eligible adults start—or finish—an associate degree or skills certificate that can lead to in-demand careers.

Since its launch in 2021, more than 66,500 students have enrolled in community college through Michigan Reconnect.

"The expansion of Michigan Reconnect is tremendous news for our region," said Katie Navock, Vice President for Enrollment Management.  "By extending eligibility to adults 21 and older, more individuals will have the opportunity to earn a college credential, strengthen Michigan's workforce, and pursue careers that lead to long-term success. We look forward to helping these students achieve their goals."

To qualify for Michigan Reconnect, applicants must:

  • Be at least 21 years old when applying.
  • Have lived in Michigan for one year or longer.
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or certificate of completion.
  • Not have previously earned an associate or bachelor's degree.

North Central Michigan College is offering several opportunities for prospective students to learn more about the program and the enrollment process.

The College will host free virtual Michigan Reconnect Lunch Sessions where participants can meet with North Central staff, ask questions, and learn how to begin their educational journey. Upcoming virtual sessions will be held at noon on July 29, August 11, and August 26.

In addition, North Central's Gaylord Center will host an Adult Learner Success Event on Wednesday, August 5, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at 620 E. Fifth Street, Gaylord.
