Jennifer WixsonNorth Central Michigan College (NCMC) faculty member Jennifer Wixson has assumed the role of president of the Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children (Michigan AEYC) governing board.

Wixson, who serves as early childhood education faculty and early childhood and teacher education program coordinator at North Central, officially began her term June 20. She succeeds to the presidency after serving one year as president-elect and four years as a member-at-large on the board.

Michigan AEYC is the state's leading professional organization dedicated to advancing high-quality early childhood education. The organization promotes best practices, professional development, policy advocacy, and research to support children from birth through age 8, along with the educators, families, and advocates who serve them.

Wixson said her years of service with Michigan AEYC have reinforced the critical role early childhood education plays in strengthening communities across the state.

"Michigan's youngest children deserve champions who are committed to the long game," Wixson said. "My years on this board have deepened my conviction that when we invest in high-quality early childhood education, we invest in the future of every community across this state. I am honored to step into this role and look forward to working alongside educators, advocates and families to advance Michigan AEYC's mission in meaningful ways."

Wixson's progression through the organization's leadership ranks has provided extensive experience with the policy, workforce, and educational issues affecting early childhood education in Michigan. As president, she will help guide the organization's strategic direction and advocacy efforts while supporting early childhood professionals statewide.

"Professor Wixson’s leadership and commitment to early childhood education have made a significant impact on our students and the communities they will serve," said Michele Andrews, dean of business, education, and adjunct faculty. "Her election to this statewide leadership role reflects both her expertise and her dedication to strengthening educational opportunities for young children and the professionals who support them. We are proud to see her represent North Central and Northern Michigan at the state level."

In addition to her work in the classroom, Wixson leads North Central's Child Care Initiative, which brings together educators, employers, policymakers, and community organizations to address child care challenges and strengthen the early childhood workforce throughout Northern Michigan.
