Major contribution from the Martin and Patricia Jahn Foundation supports technology and trades education, driving $22 million initiative to prepare students for high-demand careers
North Central Michigan College (NCMC) is excited to announce a transformative lead gift for its Career and Technical Education Enhancement (CATEE) project, a $22 million initiative that will redefine workforce education in Northern Michigan. In recognition of a generous contribution from the Martin and Patricia Jahn Foundation (MAPJF), North Central’s new 11,500 square-foot technology building will be named the Martin Jahn Technology Center, celebrating the family foundation’s remarkable commitment to the future of the college and the Northern Michigan region.
The gift, which was approved unanimously by the NCMC Board of Trustees, marks a significant milestone in the college’s effort to expand and enhance its healthcare, technology, and trades education programs.
Scheduled for completion in Fall 2026, North Central’s CATEE project includes the razing of the college’s 59-year-old Technology Building, transforming it into the Martin Jahn Technology Center, a flexible, state-of-the-art learning space dedicated to technology and trades education.
The accompanying expansion of the college’s Health Education and Science Center will create an additional 7,200 square-feet of classroom, clinical, simulation, and lab spaces to accommodate the college’s growing nursing and allied health programs.
Patricia Jahn and her late husband, entrepreneur and inventor Martin D. Jahn, established the MAPJF to support local communities and organizations that embody the philosophy of empowering individuals to improve their lives through hard work and opportunity. Its primary focus is on smaller communities, particularly in Michigan’s Cheboygan and Mackinac counties, where the family has deep personal ties and history.
The Jahns, who have long championed education as a pathway to success, also emphasize the importance of skilled trades, which they believe are often overlooked as vital, fulfilling career opportunities.
“Through our contribution, we aim to provide the tools and resources deserving individuals need to create lasting change in their lives and communities,” Patricia Jahn said.
Eric Emmerick, the Jahns’ son and an MAPJF trustee, emphasized the family’s belief that the gift will create a ripple effect, empowering North Central students and graduates to positively impact others and their communities for years to come.
“Our foundation is rooted in the belief that true philanthropy is about empowering individuals with the tools and opportunities to create a better future for themselves and their neighbors,” Emmerick said. “By investing in education and self-reliance, we hope to inspire a cycle of giving that uplifts not only individuals but entire communities.”
NCMC President David Roland Finley expressed his gratitude for the lead gift, emphasizing its transformative impact.

The college will commemorate the gift during a February 3, 2025, groundbreaking event that will bring together community members, donors, and regional leaders to celebrate this historic milestone and mark the next chapter in workforce education at North Central.
