Harbor Springs resident Julie Bacon traveled to Krakow, Poland, four weeks after the Russian invasion to help Ukrainian refugees who were flooding into the country. Soon after, Bacon began helping out in the World Central Kitchen.

Julie Bacon sees travel as the most enriching life experience you can have, as you are exposed to the world's myriad cultures and geographic landscapes. She started serious international travel in 1983 with a trip to India and hasn't stopped traveling since.
Following her 2001 retirement as a social worker with the State of Michigan, Bacon has spent most of the winters teaching English to Burmese refugees in the town of Mae Sot, Thailand.
